Cabinet approves online passport system for overseas Sri Lankans

The Cabinet approved a joint proposal to implement an online system for Sri Lankans abroad to apply for foreign passports through selected Sri Lankan missions and offices overseas.

The initiative, supported by the Inte ational Organisation for Migration (IOM), includes the establishment of biometric capture stations and the provision of necessary equipment across 20 Sri Lankan missions. 

The project also involves developing software systems, enabling real-time connectivity with the Department of Immigration and Emigration and providing technical assistance.

The proposal was presented jointly by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.
