Next Sri Lanka program to train 50,000 youth from low-income families

Saturday, 12 July 2025 - 10:20 pm

The Ministry of Rural Development, in collaboration with other ministries, has launched the “Next Sri Lanka” program aimed at equipping 50,000 youth from 200,000 low-income families with vocational skills to become employable skilled workers.

The initiative, set to begin on July 15 and run through July 23, will hold career guidance sessions at Divisional Secretariat offices across the country. Selected youth will receive full scholarships worth Rs. 50,000 to pursue vocational courses from recognized institutions, funded by the Department of Samurdhi.

The program focuses on providing NVQ Level 3 qualifications, with a pathway to NVQ Level 4. A major component of the project is to fill an estimated 20,000 job vacancies in Sri Lanka’s growing tourism industry.

Participants interested in entrepreneurship will also be offered business training and access to concessionary loans to start their own ventures.

Registrations are now open via [www.nextsrilanka.lk]
