The Supreme Court was informed by the relevant parties that the Fundamental Rights petition filed challenging the decision not to admit local students to the MBBS degree programme at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) may be settled, as the university has now opened admissions to local students.
The petition was filed by ten students who intended to apply for the MBBS programme, naming the KDU administration, University Grants Commission, Minister of Education, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, and several others as respondents.
When the matter was taken up before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Murdu Fe ando, Justice Mahinda Samayawardena, and Justice Menaka Wijesundara, Counsel Hafeel Farisz, appearing for the petitioners, informed court that a settlement appears possible in light of the university's decision to reopen the intake for local students.
He further submitted that the petitioners' final position regarding the settlement would be communicated to the court after obtaining written instructions from the clients. The petition was fixed for July 24.
Hafeel Farisz with Nishika Fonseka and Shannon Tillekeratne instructed by Shayamalee Athukorale appeared for the petitioners. Deputy Solicitor General Nirmalan Wigneswaran appeared for the respondent KDU.
