A veterinary team led by Dr. Tharindu Wijekoon from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Peradeniya, arrived at the Polpithigama area in the Mahawa Wildlife Zone around 6:30 a.m. today (July 7) to continue treatment for the ailing tusker, Bhathiya.
Although Bhathiya had been placed in a stable position using sandbags yesterday, he had moved to a different spot ove ight and wandered a short distance. The veterinary team has administered essential nutrients, protein supplements, and antibiotics, as the elephant is suffering from multiple wounds.
Dr. Wijekoon noted that the latest updates on Bhathiya’s condition will be shared with Professor Ashoka Dangolla and Tharaka Prasad, Head of the Wildlife Veterinary Unit, to determine the next steps in the treatment process.
Meanwhile, officers from the Mahawa Wildlife Office were on site ove ight and continued to provide food, which Bhathiya consumed early this mo ing.
