Cabinet nod to procure five power sets

Tuesday, 15 July 2025 - 8:38 pm

The Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation for the procurement of five power sets to engage in services for suburban and long-distance train travel.

Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda jayatissa said the Sri Lanka Railway Department does not have sufficient number of power sets to operate passenger trains in suburban areas and that there is constant passenger congestion on the trains that operate daily.

'Since most of the power sets currently in operation have been in service for over 20 years, they are continually susceptible to sudden interruptions and breakdowns. As a consequence, it has been observed that the passengers who use trains for their daily travel are encountering many inconveniences. A minimum of 96 power sets are required to maintain the railway service currently in operation, and there is a shortage of a few power sets at present,' he said.
