Nicolás Maduro, 61, has been officially declared the winner of Venezuela's presidential election by the country's electoral authority.
Elvis Amoroso, head of the National Electoral Council, announced that Maduro received 51 percent of the vote, surpassing opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, who ga ered 44 percent.
He stated that the results, based on data from 80 percent of polling stations, indicate an irreversible trend.
However, the results released by the National Electoral Council contrast with several exit polls that predicted a victory for Gonzalez.
Gonzalez represented a coalition of opposition parties after the main opposition leader, María Corina Machado, was disqualified from running. According to foreign media reports, this election could potentially mark the end of 25 years of socialist rule.
In the past decade, Venezuela has experienced an economic collapse that has driven nearly a third of its population to flee the country. Additionally, Weste sanctions have significantly impacted its oil industry.
