Conditional restraining orders issued over defamatory online posts targeting ’Teacher Amma’

Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga issued three conditional restraining orders on three online content creators, preventing them from publishing defamatory and false content on the inte et against online primary school tutor Hayeshika Fe ando, popularly known as 'Teacher Amma.'

The orders were issued after considering three separate complaints filed by Hayeshika Fe ando under Section 24 of the Online Safety Act No. 9 of 2024. 

The complaints were made against Chaminda Ranawira, Sudath Thilakasiri and Ven. Rajanganaye Saddharathana Thera, naming them as respondents.

Appearing on behalf of the complainant, Counsel Dhanushka Rahubadda informed court that the respondents had been spreading false and hate-inciting content about the complainant through online platforms. He requested the court to issue conditional restraining orders to prevent further circulation of such content and to summon the respondents to appear before court.

Counsel Darshika Ayomi and Dhanusha Udawatta also made submissions on behalf of the complainant.

The magistrate also issued notices directing them to appear before court on July 28 to present their responses.
