Friday, 04 July 2025 - 6:11 pm

Sri Lanka is grappling with a severe outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF), a highly contagious and fatal disease that has affected around 67,000 pigs and wild boars, according to the Gove ment Information Department.

Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health, Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, said that strict control measures have been introduced, including a ban on the transport, sale, and slaughter of pigs and pork products in the affected areas.

Officials have also decided to re-register all pig farms across the country as a precautionary step to prevent future outbreaks

She noted that in 2024, the virus rapidly spread across several provinces, including the Weste , Uva, Northe , and North Weste Provinces.

Dr. Kothalawala pointed out the importance of these measures to prevent further spread, pointing out that the disease has a 100% mortality rate.

Meanwhile, she said the situation has been brought under control by approximately 95%, but continuous vigilance is essential.

Dr. Kothalawala urged farmers to cooperate, stating, “Registration helps us implement biosecurity measures effectively and minimise future losses.”
